Overview
A contemporary single-family residence designed within a traditional midtown Toronto neighborhood.
Situated on a 30 × 125 ft lot, the project balances a refined modern expression with the scale and rhythm of its surrounding context—introducing a calm, contemporary presence within a street of established brick homes.
The Challenge
Integrating a contemporary home within a cohesive, character-rich streetscape
Maximizing spatial quality and natural light within a narrow lot
Accommodating both family living and a dedicated professional workspace
Creating a strong architectural identity without disrupting neighborhood continuity
The project required a design that could balance contrast and compatibility, offering a modern lifestyle while remaining grounded in its context.
The Approach
The design is driven by clarity of form, light, and spatial organization.
Key moves include:
Vertical Emphasis: A carefully proportioned massing that aligns with adjacent homes while introducing a more open expression
Integrated Workspace: A fully independent basement office with separate access
Light-Driven Design: Large openings and vertical connections that bring daylight deep into the interior
Controlled Simplicity: Clean lines and minimal detailing to reinforce a calm architectural presence
This approach creates a home that is both distinct and contextually composed.
Design Strategy
The house is organized to prioritize light, volume, and flexibility.
A double-height living space forms the spatial core of the home
A skylight above the stair enhances vertical continuity and daylight distribution
Five bedrooms and a dedicated study support evolving family needs
A rooftop terrace provides a private outdoor retreat with elevated views
Interior spaces are designed to feel open, connected, and adaptable.
Program Integration
A key component of the project is the integration of live-work functionality:
A ~55 sqm basement-level office with a separate side entrance
Physical and acoustic separation from primary living areas
Flexibility for professional use, rental, or future adaptation
This dual program supports both lifestyle and long-term value.
Envelope & Material Expression
The exterior reflects a restrained and contemporary language:
Light-toned cladding defining a clean, cohesive volume
Floor-to-ceiling glazing enhancing transparency and light
A standing-seam metal roof shaping the upper level and silhouette
The material palette offers a modern interpretation of the neighborhood context without direct replication.
Outcome
A contemporary home integrated within a traditional streetscape
High-quality interior spaces defined by light and volume
Seamless incorporation of live-work functionality
A balanced approach to context, identity, and long-term usability
